The Story of Sylvia Stark, Canadian Pioneer

Sylvia Stark (1839 – 1944) is the personification of perseverance and possibility. This sixty-minute story celebrates the remarkable life of black pioneer woman who moved from slavery to owning and working her own 200 acre farm in British Columbia.

Margaret shares some of the amazing adventures that form Sylvia’s life: crossing the country by foot over a six month period, arriving in the wild woods of Salt Spring Island, BC,in 1860, and homesteading in a new country with 6 children. Sylvia Stark’s story is a tribute to a woman of courage and perseverance, a true Canadian heroine whose passion for life inspires all.
